Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend so far and Happy Chinese New Year!  It’s been a quite week so far and I really haven’t much to post about.  It’s been mostly running with the Running Room Clinic and on my own plus my workouts on top of that.  My next run is in 22 days, The Fort Langley Historic Half.  It still hasn’t been easy for me and feel aches and pains here and there.

My runs last Tuesday and Wednesday was a very fast pace with the RR Group.  Especially, with going down hill back to the store.  I posted under 5 mins for the last 2 kms of a 6 km & 10 km runs.  Maybe that is why I’m a little sore on my 7 km run this evening & my 9 km run on Thursday.  Tomorrow will be a 16 km LSD (Long Slow Distance) run.  Luckily, the pace will be between 6:22 – 7:11.  Times that I’m really comfortable of doing and that we will be doing 10 mins runs/1 min walk intervals.

I’ll be wrapping up my 3rd week of Focus T25: Alpha Round program.  It’s been a struggle still keeping up having correct form.  It’s been especially tough when I have runs also on these days.  Legs have been burning and aching for awhile now.  I bought a spiked rubber ball to massage my sore muscles and it seemed to help a bit.  Some of these tools are above my budget so the spiked rubber ball was all I was willing to pay for under $20.

Well, I’ll be posting on Monday to see how I did with my progress.  My weight last Monday was 177.5 lbs and lost -2 inches more.  It looks like it will be tough since I’ve been asked to eat with fellow co-workers for a few days now.  I’ve been doing a lot of activities so it kept that really close but we will see this coming Monday.  Hopefully, tomorrows 16 km run will help keep me on progress in the right direction.

January 23, 2017 Journal: Chilly Chase Run

Greetings Family & Friends,

Hope everyone had a wonderful Monday. Monday is extra special because it’s the launch pad for the week.  How you start your Mondays determines how amazing your weekend will be.  My Mondays are results day for how well I did last week and I did pretty well despite missing a few workouts and a 6 km run.

Luckily, I had a race yesterday that made up for my inconsistency in my training.  It wasn’t an easy run and I paid dearly for the days I didn’t train.  I still need to work on my consistency and it will take some time and some growing pains to overcome and battle my old self.  But I did mange still to get under 2 hrs for my race.  I was extremely surprised to get it though it was a battle for majority of the race.  I was fortunate enough to follow someone who had a consistent pace for the last 12 kms of the race and I thanked her after the race for pushing me past my limits and my inner voice.

I managed to achieve a time of 1:59.51 for my 21.33 km race.  Usually, a half marathon is 21.1 km but it was a little longer than expected.  Sam achieved 1:51:42 at 21.48 km.  Crazy fast!  What I was going through physically and mentally sold me at a 2:00+ time.  I was pretty much done around the 17 km mark and the young lady in front of me was already 32 seconds ahead of me.  I guess the foot steps behind me kept me moving forward and I just kept going.  Once I saw the finish line I turned on the jets and gave it my best. About 30 seconds gap behind me so I had the finish line all to myself.

It was a challenge but a positive race overall.  Though I’m still having doubts to my BMO Marathon (42.2 km) race coming this May 7, the training I had for 3 weeks got me through the Chilly Chase Race. Instead of letting doubt creep in I will continue my training with the Running Room Clinic with my T25 workouts and take it day by day.  Build my kilometers one at a time until I get to 42.2 kms.  I’m not sure what will happen but I won’t overthink it and just follow the program everything day.  Just trust that I’m getting strong each time I complete a workout, a run and proper eating.  Just get it done and repeat!

Greetings Family and Friends,

Hope everyone is having a safe Wednesday out there.  It has been a very eventful day at work for me.  I guess with the warmer weather people think it is safe to drive faster on the road. Regardless, if it snow, ice or rain drive safe out there. Trying to safe 2-5 seconds isn’t worth throwing your life away and those around you involved.  It still bothers me what this sudden action this person did in front of my 5 ton truck.  There is no way I was stopping on a dime. Luckily, my truck swerved to the left to miss their tail end.

I was able to take off work early and sleep it off.  I got finished my workout and will be preparing to go to the Running Room Burnaby for a 10 KM Tempo run.  It’s going to be wet outside but it doesn’t look as bad as yesterday night’s 6 KM run with the RR Clinic.  Yesterday was pouring and since it rained since the morning there was a lot of puddles out there. I step in a few of them.  I’ll will be using my new shoes today since old runners are still wet.

Yesterday’s Running Room Clinic was about shoes.  There was a lot of helpful tips that I didn’t new and will implement down the road.  One was that shoes start to deteriorate even if the shoes weren’t used at all.  Apparently, the rubber only have a shelf of 2 years before it loses that cushion for your feet.  The Running Room Burnaby claim that they don’t carry shoes over 2 years old.  Good to know.  Another tip was to rotate shoes instead of sticking to one till you use up the 500 – 800 kms.  Some of the instructors have 4 – 6 shoes that they rotate in a year depending on the conditions they are doing.  Especially, with the Full Marathon Clinic we log around 800 Kms so by the time you get to race day your shoe is done.  I made the mistake of using a brand new shoe on race day back in May 2016.  Though I finished with a great time, I had a black toe and still some aches on my right foot today.

A lot great information I’m learning from my Running Room Clinic and fun discussions with fellow runners.  It’s extra motivating to get out in the rain and snow when you have great company with you.  Though I don’t see these guys outside of the Running Room Runs it just brings that spice to life when things are routine.  Making personal progress together with like-minded runners is a lot easier and safer than going solo and deciding to stay indoors.  Do what you enjoy doing and focus your energy towards that craft.  Though life is filled with opportunities to explore.  Having that one craft to call upon brings serenity and peace to your life.  Stay safe out there!

Greetings Family & Friends,

Hope everyone had a great start to the week. Mondays are usually a drag but it can also be great momentum changer for your entire week. It’s just your point of view that can make a day even great.

I had a wonderful run on Sunday with the Running Room Burnaby Group.  A nice 13 km LSD (Long Slow Distance) run that was just full of laughs then pain.  Ran with my buddy, Sam and we just joked most of the time. Fun with our Coach, Albert and cheered on our friend Shirley as she ran past us. I personally enjoyed every stop light we hit… haha.  Stuff like this makes you forget that you ran 13 – 15 kms.

So I’m very excited for this week because I got this run out of the way and I just need to do 4 more smaller runs from here on out.  The workouts have been a challenge last week but I know each one completed is a step closer to being healthier, stronger and happier in life.  I will be able to keep up with the best of them and enjoy my runs than focusing on my running time.

I’m extra excited because of my dedication to get my runs in and my workouts has dropped my weight from 184.8 lbs to 180.4 lbs. I was as low as 177.8 lbs before the weekend.  On top of that, I’ve trimmed a total of 4 inches all around.  My weekly goal is still losing .5 – 1 lbs so I won’t kill myself trying to lose more for next Monday.  I’m simply glad that I have a nice buffer just in case I get the family gather like I did this week.

Overall, I spent my time just enjoying some conversations instead of being strict on myself like I did in the past.  Staying healthy can’t be sustaining if you isolate yourself completely from the rest of the world.  You will have off days because you are creating moments and memories with the people around you.  Isn’t that the point of living and creating content on your journey?  I would like to motivate people to be healthier and active but be realistic that it’s just a daily dedication of what you can do or a few choices made that can be scaled up over time.  Progressive is the key but not to the point you’ll injury yourself or quit too soon.  Make one choice a day and/or 5 mins of something active and go from there.

January 14, 2017 Journal: Happy Belated New Year!

Greetings Family & Friends,

I hope everyone been well last year and having a great start to 2017.  It’s been almost 6 months since my last post.  I don’t know where to begin with what happened for the last 6 months.  All I can say is that it has been the very best year in my life and with my family.  We did so much the last 6 months then we did then the last 3 years.  From taking family vacations through Alberta and the Okanagan area to doing 10 races last year.

This year I already did a short 5 KM run, the Running Room Resolution Run, on Jan 1st.  It was with my wife and my running buddy, Shalyn.  Just to kick off the year and have a nice jacket to go with it.  Two days later, I joined the Running Room Marathon Clinic with Shalyn’s husband, Sam.  Already wrapping up the 2nd week of a 18 week journey today.  Learned so much and met a few friends at the store.  Though it’s the winter season and we had snow fall a lot more compared to last season, having friends that enjoy running makes you forget the cold.

November 13th was my last race, the Fall Classic (21.1 KM), and I stopped training 2 weeks after that when I decided I wasn’t going to do another race.  Last December was the first time I took it easy compared to 2014 & 2015.  Now I’m feeling it and running off my pace for about 90 seconds from my pace every kilometer.  I do have a race this coming 22nd, The Chilly Chase Half Marathon.  I know I won’t be able to repeat under 2 hrs like I did at the Fall Classic & the RMH Boundary Bay Half on Nov 6th.  My competitive side would like to push my body beyond it’s current capabilities.  It’s just how I am even if I can best avoid it by staying active every week.

With the Running Room Clinic, I’m looking to compete in my 1st FULL Marathon (42.2 KM) on May 7th.  I also started a 5 week session with Focus T25 Alpha round workouts.  I’m going to take it easy and not overwhelm my body like I’ve done in the past. Consistency is the key and being injured and fatigue won’t do any good for me.  Will also be going on the 21 Day Fix eating plan again.  It’s time to hit my ideal weight goal of 150 lbs that has been outstanding for over a year. I’m won’t be killing myself over weight gained from a huge loss.  I’m focused on losing .5 – 1 lbs per week.  I started the year at 185 lbs and wanna end the month at 181 lbs.

I will try to post more often this year than last year.  It’s for me to stay accountable again with my goals but also reflect on how much fun I’ll be having this year than last year.  There is no point in training this hard if you can celebrate your accomplishments and simply just having fun.  It’s just setting me up to taking longer off days.  Building good habits and consistency is my primary goal in posting again.  If these posts helps someone reach their goals or simply sparks a flame then that is just bonus for me.  Have an amazing like and journey!
